Therapy offers a chance to form a health connection with a trained professional who can help you sort through a variety of concerns related to your mental health, social functioning, life goals and relationships. If a client says something like "I could never sit and listen to people talk about their problems all day" my immediate thought is "not only do I wake up and do this 5-6 days a week, I look forward to it!"
There are hundreds of thousands of licensed professionals in the US who provide therapy. My goal is to reach people in underserved communities through the use of telehealth, which eliminates logistical challenges faced by many.
Therapy isn't for everyone. If you really don't like talking about your personal life, or if you don't see anything worth changing, there may be little benefit in attending. Many people seek out therapy at various times in their lives, and after engaging in therapy, many will also seek therapy in anticipation of a change in their mental health, such as a serious illness of a loved one.
I started my journey to become a licensed therapist in August 2014 when I applied to graduate school. Through this journey I met great therapists, attending useful trainings and challenged my own beliefs about what it means to live a good life.
Therapy may not be useful for everyone, but if you are seeking a new therapist, please take care in screening several through phone calls prior to an intake appointment, this way you can get a feel for who they are and their style before getting into the work.
